Notes and Pictures
The general story of how Frank Hornby came to invent the famous constructional toy Meccano and later introduced the equally famous Hornby Trains and Dinky Toys is well documented in several publications. However, none of these accounts, even the two attributed to Hornby himself, offer any insight into anything other than his businessa activities. In this new book Jim Gamble explores a little deeper into the life and character of this interesting man and his origins. Patient research has revealed information concerning each of his four brothers and three sisters, including photographs and writings of his remarkable and intrepid sister Emma. Also included are comments from one of his directors and a rare first hand account, written by someone who as a young man was a regular visitor to the Hornby residence at Maghull and often engaged in long conversations with Mr. Hornby.
Other facets of Frank Hornby's life coverred in this book, which contains well over two hundred illustrations, include the rise and eventual slow decline of Meccano Ltd. and information relating to the redoubtable Mrs. Clara Hornby and the lives and fortunes of their three offspring.. The various houses owned by the family, mirroring their rising financial and social status and Frank Hornby's brief career as the Member of Parliament for Everton are also featured.
